- Bovada is offering prop wagers on whether Boston's Brad Marchand will be fined or suspended during the Eastern Conference final
- Marchand has been suspended six times and fined five times during his NHL career
- He's never been issued supplemental discipline during the postseason
Brad Marchand has always been an NHL player who operates in the grey area between the rules of the game and the rules of the street. Sometimes, he crosses too far over the line. That's when the Boston Bruins forward forces the league to deal out disciplinary measures against him.
Bovada is offering you the chance to bet on whether Marchand will slip up as Boston tangles with the Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Final. The sportsbook has put forth prop wagers on whether he will be suspended or fined during the series.
Odds Brad Marchand Will Be Suspended During 2019 Eastern Conference Final?
*Odds taken 05/11/19
Marchand Suspends Crossing the Line
He's been suspended six times during his career but Marchand has never been punished via supplemental discipline during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Hockey people classify him as a sneaky dirty player. During postseason play, Marchand is reining in his over-the-top type of plays. He's not taking the risks that have earned him enforced sitdowns from the NHL during regular-season play.
Marchand's six suspensions during his NHL career add up to 19 games. The list includes a five-game punishment for elbowing current teammate Marcus Johansson when the latter played for the New Jersey Devils.
His most recent suspension was late in the 2017-18 season.
That's Not Fine, Brad
When it comes to the fines he's accumulated as an NHLer, Marchand's miscreant deeds run the gamut of offenses.
He was docked $2,000 for a slew foot in 2011-12. A roughing infraction in 2015-16 cost him $5,000.
A dangerous trip of Detroit's Niklas Kronwall in 2016-17 saw the league dock Marchand $10,000. That's the maximum allowable punishment under the collective bargaining agreement.
Odds Brad Marchand Will Be Fined During 2019 Eastern Conference Final?
During the 2017-18 season, he coughed up $5,000 for a cross-check and $2,000 for embellishment (diving). In total, the pesky Bruin has handed over $24,000 to the NHL.
Knowing His Limits
A man has to know his limitations. In the playoffs, Marchand calculates his actions. He teeters on the edge. But so far, he's never gone over the cliff.
During a goalmouth scramble in the second round against Columbus, he tagged Blue Jackets defenseman Scott Harrington in the back of the head with a sucker punch.
Even Harrington acknowledged it wasn't worthy of supplementary discipline.
His licking of opposing players during last spring's playoffs caused the NHL to warn Marchand of dire consequences were he to continue this pattern. He immediately put a stop to his antics.
That's the thing about him. He knows how far to push. It's why Marchand won't get fined or suspended against the Hurricanes.
