Twenty-five-year-old Jon Rahm put together a majestic bogey-free 7-under, 65 on moving day to open up an edge over the field at Torrey Pines. This marks just the second 54-hole lead for the fiery Spaniard, who was not able to convert his only previous one into a victory (2019 Players Championship).

Heading into the tournament the top three favorites to win the event are squarely in the mix, with Rory McIlroy just three strokes behind Rahm and Tiger Woods lurking as well, with a host of other players with strong pedigrees ready to pounce should Rahm falter.

Top of the Board

Jon Rahm posted a sensational round on Saturday, starting the day with a birdie out of the gate, then making a hole-out eagle the very next hole. Of course, he’s no stranger to amazing eagles at this tournament, having won his first PGA Tour title in 2017 punctuated by a lengthy eagle on the 72nd hole.

In his last four events he’s won twice and also sported a runner-up and 10th place showing. This tourney hasn’t been kind to 54-hole leaders in the past, however. Simply put, the world #3 will be a hard man to beat Sunday, and realistically his greatest pursuer is Rory McIlroy (with apologies to Ryan Palmer).

Tiger Woods Five Shots Back of Rahm

At the start of the week I cautioned against wagering on Woods with his good-not-great record here since 2013, and he has appetizing odds at +2200 to win now. With the quality of golfers ahead of him, however, it would take something staggering to get it done. If anyone can do it, obviously it would be the big cat, who’s had tremendous success at this venue pre-2014 (eight wins).

Should he do it, he’d match his largest comeback after 54 holes of his career (2009 Arnold Palmer Invitational, 2000 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am), and move into sole possession of #1 on the PGA Tour all-time wins list with his 83rd triumph, passing Sam Snead. He surged up the board with a great front nine, but stalled with a +1 backside, though he made a very important par save on the 18th green. In all likelihood, however, he’ll fall short so use your cash elsewhere.

McIlroy Primed for Yet Another Comeback Victory

The stakes are extra large for Rory McIlroy Sunday, since he’ll ascend to the #1 player in the world with a victory for the first time since 2015.

He’s the golfer with the most come from behind wins on the PGA Tour since 2010, with an astounding nine trophies. At +500 odds, you’re getting decent value on the Ulsterman, so pull the trigger on Rory and put your faith that he’ll pick up his third title in his last eight events.

Best Live Value Picks at 2020 Farmers Insurance Open

  1. Cameron Champ (+2200): Hope you took our pre-tournament advice and bet on Champ at +8000, because he’s just three back and in a tie for third. Would be second win in last seven PGA Tour events.
  2. Brandt Snedeker (+3300): Two-time winner of the Farmers (2012, 2016), Snedeker rebounded after an awful front nine to put himself in position, four back of Rahm.
  3. Bubba Watson (+10000): The 2011 winner of this tournament, Bubba is quietly five strokes behind and sporting super long odds so a sprinkle bet on him would be a big payout.
