Some of the world’s best will take the field on Wednesday. This matchup is what Champions League knockout ties are all about. Both sides have the quality to make a deep run – PSG are still looking to assert themselves on the biggest stage, while Dortmund are looking to take advantage of this squad before potential sales in the summer.
Jadon Sancho’s numbers are extraordinary. The former Manchester City forward has 14 goals and 14 assists in the Bundesliga prior to Dortmund’s meeting with Borussia Monchengladbach. His returns in the Champions League haven’t been quite as spectacular, but his role in this Dortmund side cannot be overstated.
As a creator and goal scorer, Sancho has immediately developed an on-field chemistry with Haaland. Along with Wednesday opponent Kylian Mbappe, they are set to dominate European football throughout the 2020s.
Sancho finds pockets of space between the lines, his ability to dribble and thread a pass makes him a nightmare to defend. PSG set up in a back three for the first leg, and Sancho could pull the centre-backs out of position as the two-man midfield cannot afford to drop in and pick him up.
Thomas Tuchel’s side have a week off in the lead up to this match following their 5-1 thrashing of Lyon. Mbappe netted a hat-trick, taking him to 30 club goals for the campaign. PSG have scored 28 goals in their last seven matches – their attack is blowing teams away, but the defense has been far from perfect. They have only kept one clean sheet in those seven outings.
There’s no doubt this PSG side is vulnerable at the back. They can cruise past opponents away domestically, and don’t need to be laser-focused at the back. It’s a different situation against the continent’s elite, however, and as we have seen in years past, PSG sometimes struggled to adapt to the high-stakes of Champions League nights compared to the comparatively stress-free circumstances they face in Ligue 1.

PSG aren’t going to stop Dortmund scoring. Their attack is one of the most potent in world football, making it a near-guarantee that they cancel out PSG’s away goal. A second goal on Wednesday would probably wrap the tie up for the Bundesliga side. Having created opportunities in the first leg, Dortmund’s front line will fancy their chances of scoring two or more. Dortmund have kept three clean sheets in their last four – with two supreme attacks, it could be the defenses that make the difference.
It’s a tie that could go either way, but the goal advantage and a talented attack make Dortmund the better value for this one. It could be a thriller in the French capital.
Pick: Dortmund to progress (-110)
