- Niners have dropped two of last three and fall to wild card playoff position
- San Francisco will have to win out in order to finish first in NFC West and earn a bye
- Despite latest loss, 49ers still have second-best offense in NFL
One of only a few blips this season came at the worst time for the San Francisco 49ers.
Following a last-second TD loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 15, the Niners slipped to second place in the NFC West for the first time this season.
BetOnline released its latest Super Bowl odds, which shows San Francisco’s line fading from +500 to +700 after suffering the stunning defeat to the Falcons.
2020 Super Bowl Odds
|Team||Odds at BetOnline|
|New England Patriots||+450|
|Kansas City Chiefs||+600|
|New Orleans Saints||+700|
|San Francisco 49ers||+700|
|Green Bay Packers||+1400|
Odds taken on Dec. 16
Heading into Week 15, the 49ers were listed at +433 on average and given +500 odds at BetOnline to win Super Bowl 54.
While the 49ers were able to lock up a playoff spot on Sunday, Julio Jones’ last-second five-yard touchdown catch hurt San Francisco in the standings.
Niners Fall to a Wild Card Following Loss
Sunday’s defeat not only pushed San Francisco to second in the division, but it also knocked the 49ers down to a Wild-Card spot going into Week 16. San Francisco’s recent decline in the standings comes after the team dropped two of their last three games as the season winds down.

The Niners were missing key pieces of their secondary, including cornerback Richard Sherman. San Francisco’s depleted secondary was also missing safety Jaquiski Tarrt and cornerback K’Waun Williams.
That opened up more room for Jones, who finished the day with 13 receptions for 134 yards and two TD catches.

Would the outcome have been different if the 49ers had a healthy secondary with Sherman leading the way? Perhaps, but the 49ers will have to fix things quickly in order to move back into first place heading into the playoffs.
In order to do that, San Francisco will have to win its remaining two games — including the final matchup of the season against the Seattle Seahawks.

Are the 49ers Worth Betting on at +700?
Both of San Francisco’s last two games come against NFC West rivals starting in Week 16 against the Los Angeles Rams followed by the Seahawks to close out the regular season.
It’s highly likely the 49ers win at least one and improve their Super Bowl odds, which means the current price of +700 offered at BetOnline presents tremendous value at this point of the season.
A pair of late-season losses shouldn’t stray bettors away from putting money on this 49ers team, which has shown flashes of brilliance all season long.
A true sign of a leader right here. Bosa took responsibility of their subpar play on the defensive side of the ball. Injuries finally caught up to the shorthanded D. Time to rest up & knock the Rams out of the playoffs next Saturday. #49ers pic.twitter.com/xuUrLJRbL6

The Niners still rank second overall in points for per game (30.7) behind the Baltimore Ravens — a team they could possibly face in Super Bowl 54. While San Francisco’s offense has been solid all season long, so has the club’s defense.
Heading into the second last week of the regular season, the 49ers are allowing the second-fewest yards per game (267.4), sitting behind the New England Patriots. The Niners are also giving up 17.6 points per game to opposing offenses, which is the third-fewest in the NFL behind the Pats and Buffalo Bills.
It’ll be tough for bettors to let a loss to the now 5-9 Falcons pass, but this 49ers team is resilient and just too talented to not be a top Super Bowl contender in the NFC this season.
