Lewandowski and Werner Lead the Way

Lewandowski has been unstoppable all season in both the Bundesliga and Champions League. His 25 goals lead the Bundesliga and his 11 goals in the Champions League also led that tournament prior to it being halted.

His last game came in Champions League play against Chelsea, where the star striker was forced off with a knee injury. He was to miss four weeks, which ended up taking place during the coronavirus layoff, and was back in training in early April.

The assumption has to be that he’ll be fit and ready to pick up from where he left off when the league resumes on May 16. However, there also must be a certain level of rust given he’s had a longer layoff than anyone else. Despite being back in training, it’s unlikely training sessions have been too intense thus far with social distancing practices being used in training sessions.

Regardless, Lewy holds the current four-goal lead, scored in five of his past six league matches and scored multiple goals six times this season. He’s also closing in on a personal-best of 30 goals in the league he last reached in the 2016/17 season. He should be motivated and Bayern start with a reasonable schedule against Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt.

RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner has already tied a career-high with 21 goals this season, last hitting that mark in 2016/17. He now has his sights set on potentially winning the scoring race.

Werner started the season strong with five goals in three games and tallied another 14 goals during a nine-game stretch where he scored in every game except one. However, he was ice-cold prior to the league shutdown with just one goal in seven Bundesliga matches.

Dortmund Trio

After the two frontrunners, it’s three players all from Borussia Dortmund who are next in the odds.

If we were talking of a full season still ahead of us, surely Erling Braut Haaland would be in the running. Should he remain with the team next season he very well could win the award next year. He’s been quick to adapt to the German game with nine goals in eight matches in the league.

However, there is just not enough time left in the season for him to make up at bare minimum the 16-goal gap with Lewandowski.

Furthermore, both his teammates, Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus have more goals than him, but are also too far behind right now. Sancho, the closest in the race with 14 goals, despite his scoring prowess, rarely tallies multiple goals in a game. Something he’d need to do to make up ground. Only once this season has he scored twice in a league game. Overall, the scoring is too spread out on BvB to bother betting on any of their players.

Best Bet

The Bundesliga top scorer award is officially known as the Torjägerkanone and it very likely will once again be taken by Lewandowski. Lewandowski has won in back-to-back years and in four of the past six seasons.

The problem is the value is just not there at this point at -500 odds. He could be rusty, Bayern play a relatively difficult schedule with five opponents ranked inside the top eight, and should they wrap up the league title early, could he be rested with the team still hoping Champions League play is resumed later this summer?

He could also easily score a hat-trick in one of the next couple of games and effectively end the discussion. But I’m playing devil’s advocate.

At this point it may be wiser to place a smaller staked bet on Timo Werner. RB Leipzig have one of the easier remaining schedules of the top sides still in the title race. Their remaining schedule includes matches with Mainz, Hertha Berlin, Paderborn, Dusseldorf and Augsburg, all ranked 13th or lower in the table.

RBL are serious title contenders and Werner is reportedly being targeted by several high-profile clubs, giving him plenty of motivation to finish the season strong. His 3-1 odds also at least offer some longshot value.

Pick: Timo Werner (+300)
