Kyrgios Now +150 Favorite to Win Men’s US Open 3rd Quarter After Losses by Tsitsipas & Thiem
- The 3rd Quarter bracket at the US Open has been unpredictable from the start
- Upsets have led Nick Kyrgios to become the current 3/2 favorite to win the quarter
- Taking a short price was not a good idea at the start of the tournament and still isn't
When the US Open got underway Monday three of four quarters seemed pretty straightforward. While upsets can occur, it is a big task to eliminate Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Roger Federer. The other quarter, the third, was wide-open and remains so.
Before the tournament began the third quarter was 9/1 to win the tournament for good reason. Losses by fourth seed Dominic Thiem, and number eight Stefanos Tsitsipas have made a weak bracket even less daunting. The US Open Odds indicate nobody from the third quarter is less than 28/1 (Kyrgios) to win the overall title. His outright odds have shortened from their price of 31/1 last week.

While the winner of the 3rd Quarter is unlikely to hoist the trophy, somebody will emerge and very possibly face Nadal. Let's look at the updated odds to reach the semifinals out of the 3rd Quarter.
The Favorite: Nick Kyrgios
To hit credit, Kyrgios had little difficulty with the mustached wonder Steve Johnson in the first round. Of course, because this is Kyrgios, there was still controversy.
While supremely talented and playing well, it is hard to trust a guy who we spent an entire article handicapping whether he'd go off the deep end.
Top Contender: Denis Shapovalov
He beat fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime impressively in straight sets to begin the tournament. The 20-year-old has found most of his major success at the US Open reaching the fourth round two years ago, and the third round last season.
Shapovalov made the semifinals at the Winston-Salem Open but lost in the second round in US Open tuneups in Montreal and Cincinnati. He had a very poor grass-court season.
Longshot: Andrey Rublev
The hottest player in this section of the draw is 21-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev. He knocked out Tsitsipas in four sets and Thursday faces Gilles Simon.
Rublev made the quarters in Winston-Salem before being derailed by Shapovalov. He beat Federer before falling to Medvedev in Cincinnati. Rublev's only major quarter came at the US Open two years ago.
