German Bundesliga Given -110 Odds to Return in May, But ‘No’ Favored at -130

While the majority of leagues in Europe plan for a return to football in June/July, Germany looks to be ahead of the rest of the continent as they eye a return to league action in early May. Bundesliga clubs have already been training in small groups for several weeks now and the German Football League announced recently that their plan is to play matches behind closed doors starting on the 9th of May.

Germany Controlling COVID-19

It’s no secret that Germany has one of the best health care systems in the world and they’re making that known once again with their decreased cases of the virus in the last few weeks. Health Minister Jens Spahn recently voiced that the month-long lockdown the country put in place significantly helped Germany get the virus under control. As of just a few days ago, the amount of recovered patients was substantially higher than the number of newly infected. The infection rate is at just 0.7 in the country right now.

They’ve been very consistent with testing, taking 100,000 swabs per day at the start of April, a number that has risen to 640,000. Spahn also stated that German companies will be producing 50 million face masks per week by August for health care workers.

With all this info in mind, a return to football definitely seems likely. They will be obviously monitoring each and every player and making sure they get the necessary tests on a regular basis to make sure the virus isn’t spreading between players. 20,000 tests will be needed for all players across Germany’s top two tiers.

However, the German government has banned any large events until October 24th. This would obviously mean that fixtures for the distant future will be played in front of no spectators. League officials predict that around 300 people would be present per match between players, coaches, broadcast staff, and more.

The government has not yet approved this decision by the DFL to resume play in early May, but the politicians definitely understand the financial and economical hit these clubs are taking and how crucial it is that they return to the pitch. German authorities will also be announcing by the end of the month just how many people will be allowed in public gatherings in the 16 federal states in the country, so that decision will also play its part.

Bundesliga Will Return in May

Although there is a lot of precautions about returning to football in Germany, they’re in the best position of any top-five league to resume play this soon. Obviously it will hurt clubs still with no fans in the stands, but this seems to be the only way right now. It was an exciting fight at the top of the table when the league came to a halt and it’s crucial that this season is concluded.

The league seems to have a very well thought out plan and all signs are pointing to the government giving the green light on the Bundesliga resuming.
