Mercedes Extends Dominance at French Grand Prix

Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, continued their domination of this season’s F1 circuit last weekend at the French Grand Prix. After claiming the pole for the third time this year, Hamilton powered to an easy victory by a wide 18.056-second margin over Bottas. It was his sixth victory in eight outings so far.

Now sporting a 36-point lead over second-place Bottas in the Drivers Standings, Hamilton is -1200 chalk to claim a sixth straight F1 title, with Bottas sitting as his only real competition at a distant +600 second favorite.

If you are not a Mercedes fan, the picture is equally bleak in the F1 Constructors Championship standings and odds.

With either Hamilton or Bottas taking the checkered flag in each of the seven races to date, and finishing 1-2 on six occasions, the German squad has now amassed a huge 140-point lead over archrival Ferrari in the Constructors standings, fueling massive -50000 odds of Mercedes taking home the team title for a sixth straight year.

Mercedes’ total domination of this season’s circuit has raised concerns about its impact on the legitimacy and future viability of Formula One

Mercedes’ total domination of this season’s circuit has increasingly raised concerns about its impact on the legitimacy and future viability of Formula One.

Through eight races, the German team has racked up more points than Ferrari and third-place Red Bull Racing combined, and 58 points more than the combined total of the bottom seven teams in the standings.

Apart from a year ago, when both Hamilton and Bottas failed to finish, Mercedes has dominated at the Austrian Grand Prix, claiming victory in the four previous editions of the race.

But while there looks to be little value in both the odds to win the Austrian Grand Prix or the Formula One championship futures, options remain for bettors looking to add a little excitement to an F1 season that has become all too predictable.

Ferrari Drivers in the Hunt for Fastest Lap Award

Unlike the Drivers and Constructors standings, the race for Fastest Lap remains very much up for grabs.

Five different drivers have earned points for the fastest lap so far through the first eight races, with Bottas, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, and Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly each doing so on two occasions.

That has resulted in a tight race atop the odds to produce the fastest lap at this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, with 2018 race-winner Max Verstappen joining Hamilton, Bottas, and Gasly as +350 co-favorites.

Driving for Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen turned in the fastest lap on the Red Bull Ring, ending a three-year run for Mercedes. That bodes well for a struggling Ferrari squad, whose SF90 performed well in pre-season testing, but has failed to meet expectations in race situations.

With the 4.318 km circuit largely comprised of four lengthy straightaways, Leclerc and Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel could be well positioned to take advantage, if the team has overcome some of the issues that have plagued them this season.

Vettel powered to the fastest lap for the first time this season last weekend in France, after falling just short of his first podium finish of the year at the Chinese Grand Prix. He is a +500 bet to do it again this weekend in Austria.

However, it is Leclerc that deserves consideration on the Fastest Lap odds, where he joins Vettel and Verstappen at +500.

The 21-year-old has two fastest laps to his credit this season — at Bahrain and Azerbaijan — and is coming off steady performances at France and Montreal, posting back-to-back third-place finishes.

Verstappen an Appealing Betting Option to Finish Top Three

A top two finisher in two of the past three editions of the Austrian Grand Prix, including a win a year ago, Verstappen continued producing steady results last weekend at France, turning in a fourth-place performance, and has now finished no worse than fifth in 17 straight races.

In light of Mercedes’ dominance, a +2500 wager on the 21-year-old Belgian to repeat as race winner at Austria may only be for the faint of heart. However, Verstappen offers plenty of value as a +300 bet to reach the podium with a top three finish this weekend

Picks: Leclerc to turn in fastest lap (+500), Verstappen to finish top three (+300)
