  • Chelsea still aiming for top four

With the start of the English Premier League season just hours away, BetOnline has released a series of season match bets between various teams based on who will finish higher in the table.

These two London clubs will be engaged in the battle for top four and, as BetOnline's odds show, there is very little to choose between them. Both are in stages of transition, albeit different stages, and so to second-guess how events are going to unfold over the next few months is tough to call.

Arsenal, in theory, are a year ahead of the Blues in their evolution, with manager Unai Emery now having had a full Premier League season under his belt. Frank Lampard, by contrast, is now entering his first season as a Premier League manager, and only his second as a manager, with only an average season at Derby County behind him.

Part of Chelsea's rationale in appointing Lampard was around the fact they're in the first of a two-window transfer ban, so no new faces will be arriving at Stamford Bridge this summer and, instead, Lampard has been tasked with moulding a team out of the club's existing squad and their sizeable contingent of talented youngsters.

Arsenal, by contrast, has spent big this summer with the bulk being spent on Nicolas Pepe from Lille and Kieran Tierney from Celtic, and they also tried, unsuccessfully, to land Barcelona's Philippe Coutinho. But it's in defense that Arsenal need strengthening and they've not done so. And it's for that reason we think Lampard's young guns will finish above them.

Our pick: Chelsea (-105)

EPL 2019/20 Match Up Odds: Everton vs Leicester

Team EPL Placing in 2018/19 Odds to Finish Above Opponent at BetOnline
Everton 8th -125
Leicester City 9th -105

On the basis of the EPL top six being locked out with the usual suspects, this one could be regarded as the battle for seventh, except we strongly believe that one of these two has a bona fide chance of gatecrashing the aforementioned top six.

Leicester's business over the summer has been dominated by the on/off sale of Harry Maguire to Manchester United – and it must have been a relief to both sides when it finally went through – but before that saga had even begun, manager Brendan Rodgers had spent £70 million pounds on Youri Tielemans from Monaco and Ayoze Perez from Newcastle.

As a result, the Foxes look strong as an attacking unit, but Maguire's presence in defense will be hard to replace so late in the window.

Everton meanwhile has had a cracking transfer window and have added some genuine quality to an already good squad, with Moise Kean and Jean-Philippe Gbamin both arriving for over £20 million each plus another £20 million being spent to make permanent Andre Gomes' loan from Barcelona.

The Toffees look in great shape and so not only do we expect them to finish above Leicester, we think they could sneak into the top six.

Our pick: Everton (-125)

EPL 2019/20 Match Up Odds: Norwich vs Sheffield United

Team Championship Placing in 2018/19 Odds to Finish Above Opponent at BetOnline
Norwich City 1st -165
Sheffield United 2nd +115

These two promoted teams have a tough season ahead but both have done some good business over the summer, even though the other promoted team, Aston Villa, have splashed far more cash.

Norwich has brought in five new faces, the most notable being the arrival of Ibrahim Amadou on loan from Sevilla, who has added some much-needed steel to the base of City's midfield.

The Canaries' won the Championship in some style last season without the services of a bona fide ‘scrapper' in their midfield but it's unlikely they will survive in the Premier League without one. Amadou fills that void.

Sheffield United have been busier than City in the market and have spent £43 million on seven new players. Norwich's approach of sticking predominantly with those who got them promoted has not been followed by the Blades, who will be relying on their new players settling in quickly.

In order to avoid relegation, both teams will need to get points on the board early and use the momentum of promotion but we think Norwich's studious approach to recruitment will pay dividends and they will finish clear of relegation and above United.

Our pick: Norwich (-165)
