Dwayne Haskins’ NFL OROY Odds Improve After Gruden Fired; Is There Any Reason to Bet Him?

  • Dwayne Haskins has only played in one NFL game
  • He is tied for eighth in the latest OROY odds
  • Should you bet on the Washington rookie QB to win the award?

The Washington Redskins fired head coach, Jay Gruden after a miserable 0-5 start including a 24-3 beatdown by the New York Giants followed by a 33-7 beatdown by the New England Patriots. Now that Gruden has been fired, rookie quarterback, Dwayne Haskins has seen his NFL OROY odds improve according to BetOnline.

How Have Haskins Odds Changed?

In the pre-season, Dwayne Haskins' OROY odds were hovering around the +700 range, only trailing #1-overall pick Kyler Murray. Many expected Haskins to, not only play, but start and be an impactful rookie quarterback. But after a lackluster preseason, it was announced he wasn't starting, and his odds immediately shot up to +1200 entering Week 1.

They kept going in a downward direction thereafter. On Sept. 18, he hit +3500. Then on Sept. 25, he was as long as +3900, the worst his odds had ever been.

However, his odds have slowly improved since that time, first going from +3800 to +3100, and now to +2800.

He still is a longshot to win the award, of course, but the odds suggest his chances are better now that Washington has terminated head coach Jay Gruden.

Does that accord with reality?

Is Haskins a Good Bet?

No, Dwayne Haskins is not a good bet. He is extremely unlikely to win the award, less than the 3.4% chance his odds suggest. He has only played in one NFL game and had a poor performance, passing for 107 yards and three interceptions. It was clear he is not ready to start in the NFL right now.

In addition, Kyler Murray, Gardner Minshew, and Daniel Jones have separated themselves from the pack and will be nearly impossible to catch. All three are playing good football and are likely to get better, not worse, in the final 12 weeks of the year.

Who Out of The QBs is Worth a Bet?

To me, Gardner Minshew provides the most value. All the sixth-round pick has done since taking over is produce. He is having a ton of success and has helped Jacksonville win some games, keeping them in playoff contention after Nick Foles went down early in Week 1.

I believe Minshew should either be the favorite or have the second-best odds behind Kyler Murray. At +325, Minshew offers the best OROY value at the moment.
