The US Open quarterfinals will start on Tuesday, September 8, with two matches. After an unexpected default of No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic on Sunday, it’s anyone’s tournament now. Djokovic was the heavy favorite entering the tournament and being undefeated on the year. There will now be a first-time Grand Slam champion at this year’s US Open.

[27] Borna Coric vs [5] Alexander Zverev
The 27th seed will be making his first quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam. Borna Coric played his most dominant match of the tournament, defeating Jordan Thompson 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 in just over two hours.
Coric played aggressive tennis on Sunday, breaking his opponent at 1-1 in the opening set. After a slight hiccup towards the end of the first set, Coric was able to reset, win the set, and dominate the remaining two. He finished the match recording 30 winners on Thompson’s 36 unforced errors.
The impressive week continues for @borna_coric

Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open in just 94 minutes, when he defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Davidovich Fokina did battle an ankle issue in the third set, but Zverev already had himself a comfortable lead. Fully in control of the match, from start to finish, the fifth seed served 18 aces and recorded 39 winners.
So far so good for @AlexZverev…

These two players have seen each other a total of four times before, and Coric holds the edge with a 3-1 head-to-head record, which includes a second-round win at the 2017 US Open. But the two haven’t played each other since 2018, and one could argue that Zverev has had quite the breakthrough the past two years.
It does look like Zverev will have the slight edge going into the match. Now in the quarterfinals, most matches are expected to be close, and this one is no different. Look at this one not to necessarily go the distance, but most likely four sets.
Best Bet: Zverev (-250)
[20] Pablo Carreño Busta vs [12] Denis Shapovalov
The 21-year old Shapovalov becomes the first Canadian man to ever reach the US Open quarterfinals, defeating No. 7 seed David Goffin, 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to get there. In his fourth round match, Shapovalov was only broken once, and collected 52 winners and 13 aces.

Carreño Busta advances to the quarterfinals after an unexpected situation led to Novak Djokovic being defaulted from the tournament. The No. 1 seed accidentally hit a line judge with a tennis ball, and the unsportsmanlike conduct led to an automatic default. Prior to the match ending, Carreño Busta broke to lead 6-5 in that first set. It was looking to be a hard fought battle between the two players.
Carreño Busta leads the head-to-head record against Shapovalov 3-1. The two saw each other for the first time at the 2017 US Open, and another three times last year in 2019. All of Carreño Busta’s wins were on a hard court surface. Shapovalov’s came on clay.
Look for the match to be the closer of the two. Shapovalov, the favorite with -195 odds, has been playing very impressive tennis, but he isn’t known for polished, error free tennis. The young player has been known to be inconsistent. If that’s the case and Carreño Busta finds a way to capitalize on them, it will be very interesting. Don’t be surprised if this match goes the distance, and well into the evening with it’s 8:15pm start.
Best Bet: Shapovalov (-195)
