New York Jets | -112 | +1 (-120) | U 39.5 (-110) |
Odds taken Sept. 30th at DraftKings
Both the Broncos and Jets opened last season 0-3. They were both 0-4 after four weeks a year ago, which can’t happen again. So there’s that.
Handicapping the Handicapped
Two teams playing bad football playing against bad football teams. Go ahead and try and handicap this battle of hapless and haphazard clubs.
Even the oddsmakers are getting headaches trying to do so.
Thursday Night Football this week:
0-3 Denver Broncos
@
0-3 New York Jets— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) September 27, 2020
Denver opened as the one-point road favorites. But before you could say “hold on a minute, they’re playing the Jets,” the betting line jumped to Broncos -2.5
It grew as long as Denver -3. Then the Broncos promoted third-stringer Brett Rypien to starting quarterback.
The line moved back toward New York’s AFC squad. And it returned to its original launching point of Denver -1 in the Broncos vs Jets odds.
Third Pick vs Third String
Jets quarterback Sam Darnold was the third player chosen during the 2018 NFL Draft. Broncos QB Rypien was Denver’s third-stringer when the team took the field for Week 2 of this season.
Rypien relieved Jeff Driskell in last week’s 28-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Driskell started in place of injured #1 QB Drew Lock (shoulder injury).
Mekhi Becton gets hurt. Sam Darnold two pick six, three all together. Everyone else is getting hurt, the defense is TRASH and Adam Gase is still our head coach. One more thing, we're currently 0-3 with a game on Thursday……..I hate them pic.twitter.com/Al1BF2j5k1

Rypien is the nephew of Mark Rypien, the winning QB for Washington in Super Bowl 26. That’s about the only way that either of these teams and Super Bowl will be mentioned in the same sentence.
Darnold threw for a touchdown last Sunday as the Jets lost 36-7 to the Indianapolis Colts. He also was intercepted three times, two of which were returned for pick sixes.
Key Injuries On Both Sidelines
The injury list for the Jets reads like a who’s who of their key offensive personnel. Five offensive starters are either out or listed as questionable.
Those who are out include 1,000-yard rusher Le’Veon Bell (hamstring) and wide receiver Breshard Perriman (ankle). Receiver Jamison Crowder (hamstring) and both starting tackles – George Fant (concussion) and 2020 first-round pick Mehki Becton (shoulder) – are all questionable.

Receivers Denzel Mims (hamstring), Jeff Smith (shoulder) and Vycint Smith (abdominal) are also on injured reserve.
The Broncos also show up with a lengthy docket of walking wounded. Besides Lock, receiver Courtland Sutton (ankle) and linebacker Von Miller (ankle) are out. Running back Philip Lindsey (toe), a thousand-yard rusher the past two seasons, is listed as probable.

Trends Worth Considering
The Broncos are 5-2 straight up and against the spread in their last seven games against the Jets. Denver is 6-1 ATS in its last seven October games. The Broncos are also 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a game when they’ve scored 15 points or less.

The ‘Under’ is 4-2 in Denver’s last six games. Denver has a third-string QB making his first NFL start. The Jets are last in the NFL in total offense (263.7 yards per game), passing offense (175.3 ypg) and scoring (12.3 points per game).
Best Bet: Under 39.5 points (-110)
