Calculating Each-way bet?

I was in the bookies with some of my friends and we each decided to pick out 5 horses for the first 5 races and throw €1 each way on it. Surprisingly enough mine came in, but two placed and did not win. I was told if they all won I would have getting over €5,500 but now that 2 placed it went down to just €52. Is this correct? If so what cause the steep drop in payback?
The horses were:

Our Conor 4/1 Win
Shadow Catcher 16/1 Place
African Gold 6/1 Place
Bob's Worth 11/4 Win
Salsify 5/2 Win.

That looks around the right figure – I'd have to check the results and get my calculator out to be sure. You bet an each-way accumulator, right? That's effectively two completely separate bets – a win accumulator and a place accumulator. The stakes stay separate when they roll over to the next race so after the first winner you'd have had 5 Euros on the winner of the second race and 2 Euros on the place.

Your second horse lost so unfortunately the win accumulator is a losing bet and doesn't go any further. The place accumulator pays out at place odds which is what caused the huge drop in payout. If the place odds were 1/4 of the win odds then your place odds were evens, 4/1, 6/4, 11/16 and 5/8 respectively.

Why were the bookies so wrong and online polls so right in BB?

Polls had Aaron ahead before the final vote yet bookies had Alex to win easily with Jay a distant third.

In the past Brian the bookies have always been 99% right but that was in the days when it was a vote to evict. I don't know how it works but it seems that the change has come with the vote to SAVE that has run through this BB. But that is just my theory!
