ATP St. Petersburg Open Final Odds & Preview: Rublev vs Coric

Due to COVID-19, the St. Petersburg Open was postponed and moved to October following the French Open. It’s made for an interesting challenge for players, going from one surface to another, and back again. But the finals of the tournament is finally here, and Andrey Rublev and Borna Coric will be going head-to-head.

Rublev’s St. Petersburg Open odds have been good since the start. And since the early upset sending Andrei Medvedev home, he’s been the favorite to win the tournament.

Rublev’s Road to the Finals

Third-seed Rublev beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday to reach the final of the St. Petersburg Open. And with this semifinal win, not only did he earn himself a spot in the final, but it was also a big win for him to qualify for the Nitto ATP finals for the first time. Rublev went on to save five of six breakpoints after going down a set to Shapovalov. And this wasn’t the first time he’s had to comeback this tournament.

It wasn’t an easy match for Rublev, as Shapovalov really challenged him throughout, including taking the first set. From that first set, it looked like Shapo was the one to beat. But in the second set, Rublev was able to take advantage of four double faults Shapovalov committed in a single game.

Throughout the match, it was Rublev who was the most consistent, which led him to win. But he wasn’t overpowering or really outplayed his opponent. Rublev kept his cool, and played consistent tennis from start to finish.

Coric’s Road to the Finals

Like his opponent in the final, Coric had to come back from a set down to beat his opponent, Milos Raonic 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the other semifinal. He found himself down a set when Raonic won in a quick 37 minutes. But he was able to find his way back to reach his second straight St. Petersburg Open final.

Raonic entered the match having won all his service games, but in the second set, Raonic double faulted and started to fall apart. Coric was able to find back-to-back breaks, and finish the second set off with an ace.

Much like the other semifinal match, Coric just played much more consistent tennis than Raonic. The Canadian relies heavily on his serve, and when Coric was able to return, Raonic wasn’t able to fight back. Raonic recorded many errors after that first set, and Coric was able to take full advantage and book his ticket to the finals.

Head-to-Head

This will be the fourth time they have faced each other in their careers. Rublev has won all three previous meetings. The first time they met was at the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2017, with the most recent match in 2019 at the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai. It’s worth noting that all three meetings have been on hard court surfaces.

Best Bet

Both players have played excellent tennis up until this point in Russia. Coric has been here before, as recent as last year, which should play into his advantage. But based on their last matches, Rublev had more control. And despite Bornic being able to come back, losing that first set 1-6, Raonic did help him out with errors and faults throughout the rest of the match. But expect this to be a battle, and most likely go the full three sets.
