Oregon Gets Ready to Embrace Mobile Betting
It was a long wait for mobile wagering to arrive to Oregon, but it is finally almost over. According to recent reports, the state Lottery is gearing up final preparations for the long-anticipated launch of a mobile app on October 7.
The lottery agency is understood to have completed testing on its Scoreboard mobile wagering app last week and that it is awaiting final approval on banking options. If it secures the necessary approval from Visa, Mastercard and other banking partners, Scoreboard is expected to go live next week.
The Oregonian sports columnist John Canzano first broke the news about the Oregon Lottery’s target date in a tweet from late last week.
Lottery officials originally planned to launch the state’s first mobile betting app ahead of the NFL Kickoff Game on September 5. However, that plan collapsed when the app failed to pass successfully its first round of testing.
The delayed launch of Scoreboard prevented the app from becoming Oregon’s first sports betting product. The Siletz Tribe managed to beat the state-owned app and open the state’s first sportsbook at its Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City.
The tribal retail sportsbook opened doors on August 27. It is not only Oregon’s first sports betting facility, but also the first one in the Northwest. The state’s other nine tribal casinos are, too, expected to join the sports betting mix at some point in future.
However, under the tribes’ current compact in the state, they are not allowed to run digital sports wagering operations.
College Sports Bets Not Allowed
While the Scoreboard app will provide bettors with the convenience of being able to place bets on their favorite sports from anywhere within the state’s borders, its tribal brick-and-mortar rival has one important advantage – it takes bets on collegiate sports.
Lottery officials said previously that the digital betting operation will officially limit betting options to only professional sports as these are “an easier sell to the broader audience” and that they hope to be able to include college athletic events sometime next year.
Oregon is home to two Power Five teams – the Oregon State Beavers and the Oregon Ducks. On the other hand, the state only has one major professional sports league representative – the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers.
The lack of college sports betting option will certainly see the Scoreboard app lose some wagering action to its retail counterpart.
Oregon was the 12th state to go live with athletic gambling following the May 2018 landmark SCOTUS ruling that struck down the long-standing PASPA ban. The state did not have to implement any changes to its gambling law as it was partially exempted from the federal sports betting ban.
News that Oregon would go live with a state-run mobile betting app first emerged this past February. The Lottery selected European gambling technology provider SBTech as its sports betting partner the following month. As mentioned earlier, the app was slated to roll out in late August or early September, but failed to pass inspections.
